The word \u201ccantuccino,\u201d derived from \u201ccanto,\u201d means \u201ccorner\u201d\u2014a small, crunchy piece.<br \/>\nAs early as the late 17th century, the ACCADEMIA DELLA CRUSCA referred to it as \u201cCantuccio,\u201d a cookie made in slices from fine flour, sugar, and egg whites.
